Essentials of Organic Chemistry Online Short Course

Have you been away from organic chemistry for a while and need a review of the basics? This course will renew your knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry by reviewing nomenclature, oxidation reduction, typical reactions of functional groups from a mechanistic perspective, stereochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Course Details

Key Topics

  • Nomenclature of molecules containing the 12 most common functional groups (both aliphatic and aromatic)
  • Oxidation/reduction relationships between organic molecules
  • The nature of each functional group underlying the most common reaction mechanisms involving that functional group
  • Stereochemistry, hydrogen bonding, and the importance of these concepts to understanding drug/receptor interactions
  • Individual study of one mechanism of reaction (choice from several) to realize the details of reaction mechanisms

Information

Have you been away from organic chemistry for a while and need a review of the basics? This course will renew your knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry by reviewing nomenclature, oxidation reduction, typical reactions of functional groups from a mechanistic perspective, stereochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Who Should Attend

Technical professionals who wish to enhance their success by renewing their knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry. It is ideal for individuals who have been away from organic chemistry for awhile and need to sharpen their memory of the basics prior to taking higher-level ACS courses related to organic synthesis, drug design, or spectroscopy.

Benefits

  • Gain confidence.
  • Regain a global perspective of the relationships of organic functional groups.
  • Understand the essential concepts for the writing of mechanisms of reactions.
  • Use the relationships between functional groups as a basis for rational molecular conversions.
  • Review the essential concepts for understanding rationales for receptor/drug interactions.

About the Instructor

  • Lindy Harrison

is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry (retired) at York College of Pennsylvania where she taught organic chemistry and the capstone Physical Sciences seminar that included technical writing. Dr. Harrison teaches each of the following ACS Short Courses in-person and as webcasts: Essentials of Organic Chemistry, Effective Technical Writing, and Effective Technical Writing (English as a Second Language Version).
