Ramanathan Nagarajan (NAGU), Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University

Professor Nagarajan had a 26-year long teaching/research career at The Pennsylvania State University from which he retired in 2005 as Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering. He has continued his research career with the US Army, currently holding the position of Senior Research Scientist for Soldier Nanomaterials. His research interests span the fundamentals and applications of a wide range of colloidal and nanoparticle systems generated from surfactant and block copolymer molecules. He has developed and taught graduate and undergraduate courses as well as industrial short courses on colloidal and interfacial phenomena, molecular self-assembly, surfactants in solution and at interfaces and nanomaterials. He has authored approximately 120 journal articles and book chapters, receiving more than 6500 citations and an h index of 39 (Google Scholar Citations).  Nagarajan is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Institute of Chemists. He has been the Program Chair of the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry for 1999-2007 and 2010-current. He has been the Guest Editor of "Colloids and Surfaces" and "Advances in Colloid and Interface Science" and editorial board member of "Journal of Colloid and Interface Science", “Journal of Macromolecular Science Part A. Pure and Applied Chemistry” and Encyclopedia of Surface and Colloid science. Nagarajan has the unique distinction of serving as the Co-Chair of multiple national Colloid and Surface Science Symposia (1988 at Penn State, 1998 at Penn State, 2002 at University of Michigan and 2016 at Harvard University). He has edited four ACS Symposium Series books: Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Stabilization, Passivation and Functionalization (2008), Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for Chemical and Biological Defense (2009), Amphiphiles: Molecular Assembly and Applications (2011) and Nanomaterials for Biomedicine (2012) and the Wiley book, Self-Assembly: From Surfactants to Nanoparticles (2019).
