About the Course

Get an overview of general concepts in synthetic organic chemistry, including fundamental elements of strategy, reactivity principles, synthetic equivalency, asymmetric synthesis, biochemical applications, and organometallic chemistry. Also, learn about the major types of reactions used to construct complex molecules, especially through use of carbon-bond forming methods.

We’ll spend time discussing applications to actual syntheses, as well as investigating the history of some of the most important methods used today.

Key topics include the following:

  • Basic concepts of strategy in designing syntheses of organic compounds.
  • Recent developments in enantioselective synthesis.
  • Modern organometallic coupling reactions.
  • Current aspects of carbanion, carbocation, radical,carbene, cycloaddition, and alkene chemistry
  • Construction of carbocyclic systems.
  • Use of enzymes and other biological techniques in synthesis

Registrants are encouraged to bring a small set of molecular models to the course.
