  • Day 2: Resolution, Columns and Quantitative Analysis

    Resolution Equation (how to choose the correct chromatographic conditions)
    GC Theory Overview – Explains why we like small diameters and thin films
    Capillary column technology; column dimension and stationary phase selection
    Calibration methods: Area % – internal and external standard

    Laboratory Experiments:

    GC Parameters
    Detailed investigation of temperature and flow effects on a separation

  • Day 3: Detectors, GC/MS, Headspace

    Overview of available detectors; details of FID & TCD
    GC/MS – How it works and why it is important
    Headspace GC – Theory, practice and instrumentation

    Laboratory Experiments:

    Column installation
    Injector disassembly and maintenance
    Quantitation of an unknown employing internal vs. external standard techniques

  • Day 4:  Method Development & Troubleshooting/Maintenance

    Temperature programming
    Fundamentals of method development
    Troubleshooting Fundamentals
    Troubleshooting from actual chromatograms

    Laboratory Experiments:

    Develop a method for a completely unknown mixture.
    Optimize the newly developed method for speed.
    Participants will end up with a method that runs in less than 2 minutes…for a baseline separation of 11 compounds!
